We know firefighters have high exposures to toxic substances.

The question is:

What do we do about it?

The program:

The Firefighter Detox & Wellness Program is a 12-week, medically supervised program designed to support firefighter health through clinical testing and treatment, supplementation, nutrition and lifestyle support, health coaching, and education that support the body's natural detoxification and elimination processes.

The program is offered in partnership with Integrative Health Action Network, a nonprofit; Wild Oak Medicine and Nolia Naturopathic Medicine, medical clinics; and the Volunteer Fire Foundation.

Since 2023, we have completed four rounds of our groundbreaking Firefighter Detox Pilot Program in Sonoma County, California, and one round in Los Angeles, which was funded by the cancer research foundation Phase ONE.

The 2027 Sonoma County Firefighter Detox & Wellness Program is the sixth round of this groundbreaking work.

What to expect:

Most participants have a very positive experience in the program. Many see measurable decreases in their toxin levels, in some cases even with ongoing exposure, and report improvements in sleep, energy, mental clarity, and overall well-being. Individual results vary based on factors including time in service, exposures during the program, and cumulative toxin burden.

As with any treatment program, there are potential risks as well as benefits, and outcomes differ from person to person. Before enrolling, each participant will meet individually with a naturopathic doctor to make sure the program is a safe and appropriate fit for them. Our clinical team will support you throughout the process and monitor your progress along the way.

• Supplements [daily] – support detoxification and liver function

• Sauna [weekly]– helps to excrete mobilized toxins through sweat

• Health coaching calls [monthly] – scheduled calls with a certified health coach

Disclaimer

THIS IS A RIGOROUS TREATMENT PROTOCOL THAT REQUIRES FULL COMMITMENT. WE HAVE AN EXTREMELY LIMITED NUMBER OF OPENINGS, AND EVERY SPOT THAT GOES UNUSED IS ONE THAT COULD HAVE BENEFITED ANOTHER FIREFIGHTER. IF YOU HAVE ANY REASON TO DOUBT YOUR ABILITY TO COMPLETE THIS PROGRAM IN FULL, PLEASE DO NOT ACCEPT A SPOT.

OUT OF RESPECT FOR THIS WORK AND FOR OUR TEAM’S TIME, WE ASK THAT YOU STAY IN GOOD COMMUNICATION WITH US THROUGHOUT THE PROGRAM. IF ANYTHING COMES UP THAT AFFECTS YOUR ABILITY TO MAKE A SCHEDULED APPOINTMENT, PLEASE LET US KNOW AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

The scholarship:

We are able to offer a limited number of scholarships to the 2027 Sonoma County Firefighter Detox & Wellness Program thanks to the incredible generosity and partnership of the Sonoma County Fire Chiefs Association and the Northern Sonoma County Fire District, which donated a significant portion of the proceeds from its annual Wine Country to the Rescue fundraiser to support this and other firefighter wellness initiatives offered by Integrative Health Action Network and the Volunteer Fire Foundation.

Their donations allow us to offer this resource-intensive, multi-month program at zero cost to participating firefighters and reflect a shared investment in the long-term health and well-being of Sonoma County’s firefighters.

The application:

The application will take approximately ten minutes to complete. Please answer all application questions as thoughtfully and accurately as possible. Your application will be blinded and evaluated by the program’s medical team, so it’s important that you neither minimize nor embellish your responses.

The team:

The Firefighter Detox & Wellness Program’s clinical operations are led by Integrative Health Action Network (IHAN), a Sonoma County-based nonprofit organization that formed during the 2017 Tubbs Fire, in collaboration with two local naturopathic medical clinics: Wild Oak Medicine in Santa Rosa and Nolia Naturopathic Medicine in Sebastopol.

Administrative and program operations are jointly managed by IHAN and the Volunteer Fire Foundation.

The program’s clinical team is led by licensed naturopathic doctors (NDs) who have worked closely with firefighters and other first responders since the 2017 Tubbs Fire. IHAN’s clinical team has developed and refined the clinical protocols used in our firefighter programs, with a focus on environmental health and integrative medicine.

The doctors:

Four licensed naturopathic doctors manage the clinical elements of the program and oversee participants' medical treatment:

Dr. Jen Riegle, Medical Director, IHAN; Wild Oak Medicine

Dr. Chris Holder, Director of Clinical Research, IHAN; Wild Oak Medicine

Dr. LaDeana Jeane, Director of Clinical Operations, IHAN; Nolia Naturopathic Medicine

Dr. Liberty Hunter, Program Clinical Support; Wild Oak Medicine

Drs. Riegle, Holder, and Jeane have forty years of combined clinical experience and, in 2025, were jointly named the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians’
Physicians of the Year for their groundbreaking work with firefighters.

Dr. Hunter is an experienced core provider in the program, working closely with IHAN’s clinical leadership team.

Naturopathic medicine

Naturopathic doctors are licensed healthcare providers trained at accredited, four-year, postgraduate naturopathic medical programs. Their education includes comprehensive training in conventional medical sciences, including anatomy, physiology, pathology, microbiology, immunology, cardiology, clinical and physical diagnosis, and laboratory diagnosis, alongside extensive training in nutrition, botanical medicine, and other naturopathic and integrative therapies.

In California, NDs are licensed and regulated by the state and must meet established education and clinical training requirements and pass national board examinations.

Learn more about naturopathic doctors and their training through the California Naturopathic Doctors Association.

All clinical care is provided within each practitioner's professional scope of practice. Participants receive individualized screening and medical oversight throughout the program, with protocols adjusted when appropriate based on health history, laboratory findings, tolerance, and individual needs.

PRIVACY DISCLOSURE

Your clinical information will be shared exclusively within the clinical team and with IHAN administration only when appropriate and necessary. We will share non-medical, funding-related information with program funders only to ensure proper use of funds.
